Tips to Survive Your First Holiday Gathering in Your New Home

You've got a new home and you're ready to make the most of your double ovens, sit-down kitchen island, butler's pantry-and the many architectural upgrades, like the loft, rec room, and fireplace-that you dreamed about when your home was being built. Well, read on, because we've got some great tips to get you through your first holiday gathering in your new home, trouble-free.

BEFORE: Plan ahead

First things first, check your liquor cabinet, wine rack, and beer fridge in your pantry-restock as necessary.

Prep some of the food and drink the day before, if you can: cut veggies, make and crush ice cubes, marinate meats, pre-combine ingredients, etc.

Fill salt and pepper shakers, your sugar bowl, and other condiments to the top.

Reload the paper towel holder and have a few extra rolls around just in case.

Little kids expected? Keep those hands and minds busy by having a stack of paper, coloring books, and crayons at the ready in your sunroom, rec room, or breakfast area.

Teens coming? Not much preparation needed. They'll be texting the whole time anyways. Have a loft? Create a teen hangout load the mini-fridge with soft drinks and snacks.

Older folks? Keep them warm. Freshen up your throw blankets and put them in your great room, morning room, and on the recliner in the library (if they want to sneak off and have a nap).

Stock up on toilet paper and hand soap and put them in each bathroom and powder room on every floor.

DURING: Delegate

Designate someone to answer the door for you and hang up your guests' coats.

Have another family member or friend offer your guests a beverage or show them to the hors d'oeuvres table.

Have someone watch a pot on the stove or keep an eye on the oven (or ovens) for a few moments here and there so you can greet your guests properly and let them know when dinner will be served.

Enlist kids (wave a few dollars around first) to pick up empty cups, napkins, and plates that are lying about throughout the evening. Make it a contest to see who can collect the most.

AFTER: Rest and Rejoice

Your much-anticipated first holiday gathering in your new home is finally over and it was a success! Now it's time to retreat to your owner's bedroom, fill up your spa tub with hot water and bubbles, light a few candles, and reflect on the good time that was had by all. Or, maybe you'll want to retreat to the Man Cave in your rec room for a nightcap and a late-night action film. Whatever you choose, it's time to celebrate a job well done.
