7 Tips to Make Moving Easier

Moving is a part of life. However, this process can feel overwhelming for the most organized person. Whether you are traveling across the street or across the country, it doesn’t have to be stressful! Follow these seven moving tips and tricks, and you’ll be relaxing in your new space before you know it.

  1. Get things started ASAP. The best way to ensure your move goes as smoothly as possible is to start earlier, rather than later. If you’re hiring movers or planning on having services such as a deep cleaning done, book early. Waiting means paying a higher price or not being able to book on your timeline. Once the dates are finalized for the move, make sure to contact your utility providers to schedule service at your new home!
  2. Declutter. A crucial moving tip is to not bring anything into your new home that you don’t need. Before you pack a single box, carefully consider what items should be tossed, kept, sold or donated. Also take measurements of your new home and get rid of any furniture or large items that won’t fit. If there are some things you absolutely can’t get rid of but you’re not sure you need, consider putting them in a short-term storage unit for now.
  3. Stock up before you move. A few days before the big move, stock up on supplies. The last thing you want is to have to make multiple store runs when you are in your packing groove! Order box cutters, adhesive bandages, permanent markers, packing tape, paper towels and garbage bags.
  4. Stay organized. One way to keep yourself organizedis to print out color coded labels or used colored masking tape. Establish a color for each room of your home and label the contents of the box and room it belongs to. When you arrive at your new home, use the colored tape or labels to mark entrances in each room.
  5. Create a super important box/bag. As you’re packing up your space, make sure you have an overnight bag with all your personal essentials. Even if you are moving down the street, you will still need a bag with everything you need to function for the next day or two. This means outfits for the next few days, toiletries, medication, phone chargers, snacks and anything else you’ll need easy access to when your new home is filled with moving boxes!
  6. Smaller boxes are your friend. A common mistake many people make when moving is trying to cram all of their belongings into the largest possible box. It not only makes the job harder, but also brings a better chance of breaking your items! Instead, use as many boxesas you need and try to keep them to a 50-pound maximum.
  7. Pack efficiently. Packing for your move might be the most time-consuming and stressful process. Save yourself time, effort and hair loss by packing efficiently while still protecting your belongings. If you have furniture such as dresser, use the drawers to store clothing and have the movers wrap up the entire thing full! For your clothes already on hangers, leave them there – group your items in large garbage bags or a wardrobe box. If you have luggage or suitcases lying around the house, use them to store heavier items. The wheels allow you to transport these items easily and will save you boxes.

We hope these moving tips help make your move as easy as possible, or as easy as moving can be! Find whatever works for you and don’t forget to treat your movers and yourself in this process.
